Pootling around the port

A recent tour of the Port of Bristol uncovered some fascinating facts. Most of us will have seen the docks from the outside but 12 intrepid explorers got a rare behind the scenes tour with A Forgotten Landscape in March.

Volunteers said “Having seen the docks from the outside for many years, brilliant to see it from within and what a huge operation takes place there”.

Did you know?

  • Cars face out to estuary if they are being exported, and in if they have just come in. There’s more than usual at the moment because of the number plate change.
  • Coal is transported under the Avon on a conveyor belt.
  • There are pipes to take aeroplane fuel to airports from dock, including Heathrow.
